Apaneca Canopy Tour is lots of fun!
Reviewed by osotex on Oct 4, 2010

Apaneca is a small village about an hour from San Salvador, in the Ahuachapan Department. Surprisingly, it hosts quite a lot to see and do. On the "to do" list you should definitely take the zip line "canopy tour." They have good guides who assist you at all stages and transportation from the town to the starting point and return. You start off slow and get longer and faster zip lines as you progress. The last few are quite long and lots of fun. To see some pictures of the Canopy Tour, go to these sites: http://osote.net/gallery/Ahuachupan-Province and here: http://osote.net/Galerie/elsalvadortrip_2006/index35.html El Salvador is a great place to visit although lately (2010) I would advise caution when in San Salvador and when traveling. I have never had any problems, but you should be aware of your surroundings as in any big city.

EVEN IF I AGED 5 YEARS BECAUSE OF THE SCARE, IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT

I booked the tour while visiting my family and as a gift to my husband who is an avid outdoorsman. I wanted him to have a close experience with Salvadorian forest and landscape. We rented a car during our stay in El Salvador and my hubby was brave enough to face the crazy city traffic, but once in the countryside, no problem, we only needed someone who new the road (My father volunteered as guide). The advertisement says that you should make reservations in advance, but I waited until half an hour before arriving to call, in case we didn't make it and I didn't have no problems at all booking the tour, it was good I did that, cause without the receptionists help with the directions, we never would have found the place, she even went outside the street and flagged us down when we almost passed their location and at Apaneca's Casa de La Cultura. . Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the young staff and ushered to an outdoor cafe, where we were offered coffee and pastries while everything were ready. They load us into a rickety pick up truck and up the volcano we went. The guys who were our guides were very experienced and friendly and always looked after our safety. I was scared at the beginning and almost backed down in my intentions but didn't want to appear as a completely looser, so I just closed my eyes and take the leap. Tthe first zip line was a short one and not so steep, so it went pretty well, and after 4 or 5 more, I was enjoying it very much; I even felt brave enough to open my eyes while going down, and took some pictures of my husband coming behind. The guides made it look so easy and they were very confident, cracking jokes while zipping down, or helping us up and down. It was not until we got to the #8 cable that my knees almost gave up when I saw the drop and length of the line and almost cried, but it was too late then to quit, I was told that if I didn't went thru the cables, I would have to walk . Finally, I made my mind and screamed and jumped at the same time, zipping down the longest, and more inclined line I have ever seen. When we finally made it to the end, the guides congratulated us for completing the tour. Back at the "Casa de la Cultura" they offered to show us some of the pictures that one of the guides took of us and we had our pick for $5 each, a little expensive, but what the heck!! And then we browsed thru the pictures of the other braves who completed the tour before us and they have them for display at the walls. The little souvenir shop had marvelous keepsakes and local art crafts for sale and my husband picked a carved wooden mask of a red wolf...???... We drank some beers, took more pictures and asked directions for another point of interest nearby, the "Laguna Verde", which we were told it was less than 30 minutes ride. The whole tour took us about 2 hours and it was much better that expected, my husband love it and I have the pictures to prove that I was there!!!!. I totally recommend it to those who are looking for outdoors adventure and fun. You do not need to be in excellent physical condition, just be able to walk some short distances and have enough courage to take the leap. If you go early in the morning, like 9 am. You can go afterwards to the craft stores along the road, or stop at Juayua town and have lunch on one of their famous "pupuserias". even better, make it a weekend trip and then stop at the worldwide famous Gastronomic Fair that takes place every weekend at Juayua. I do not recommend you to eat a large meal before taking the Canopy Tour. The only downsize: No wildlife at all, we heard some birds but never saw a single animal and that is one of the attractions highlighted on the brochure, but we were making a lot of noise so, I think that was one of the factors.

Great experience!!
